Our Mission

SLA strives to represent students who are interested in careers of non-traditional librarianship, careers external to public and academic librarianship, and even careers more towards the information science side of the field.

Our Mission is to promote the field of special librarianship to the students of the Faculty of Information and Media Studies and interested individuals.

By establishing ties with local professionals, other SLA student groups, SLA regional chapters, and the head SLA organization, we can draw upon and contribute to the resources, expertise and creativity to increase awareness of special librarianship. This increase in awareness will produce a higher level of appreciation and contribution to this field thus ultimately leading to future developments in special librarianship. A major goal for the group is to better equip students for finding, preparing for and attaining jobs in special libraries.

Coinciding with our mission, the Executive Team of the SLA has established a theme of professional development. We hope to create opportunities for students in the MLIS program at Western University to further enhance their knowledge, skills, and experience through the presentations, workshops, tours, and other events that we host. Please visit our Upcoming Events page to find out about the exciting things we are doing!
